Seattle has a mural of Napoleon Kaufman that stands 10 stories high!
George's career has been plagued by well-publicized attitude problems, including a nationally televised sideline shouting match with Atlanta coach June Jones in 1996, which prompted the Falcons to release him. Vikings coach Dennis Green had dinner with George on Tuesday night, and they met again over breakfast Wednesday. "His visit went very well," Green said. "We're looking for a guy to come in and play backup to Randall Cunningham. It's hard to say where things are at this point. Now we've just got to see if we have the opportunity to make a business deal." George has played for Indianapolis (1990-1993), Atlanta (1994-96) and Oakland (1997-98) after being the No. 1 pick in the 1990 draft.
(AP) - Todd Marinovich, a 1991 first-round NFL draft pick with a troubled history, was cleared Friday by the league to pursue a comeback. "He's very excited," said Leonard Shulman, Marinovich's lawyer. "He has been working towards this for the past six months." Marinovich, 29, has not played in the NFL since 1992. He was cut by the Los Angeles Raiders at the end of the 1993 training camp. After nearly a year off, the former Southern California quarterback resurfaced in 1994 to play in the CFL. He lasted three weeks before a serious knee injury required surgery. Marinovich was sentenced to six months in jail in 1997 after pleading guilty to a felony charge of cultivating marijuana.
Although Marinovich was not technically suspended, Shulman said, the league established guidelines for his return, including enrolling in a rehabilitation program, counseling and intermittent drug testing, Shulman said. "We were successful in demonstrating that through his probation (from the 1997 drug conviction) he was being tested regularly, and for the last 18 months he had been clean," Shulman said. Although the league didn't specify terms for Marinovich's reinstatement, Shulman said he expected monthly, unscheduled drug testing to continue. "We support that and Todd supports this also," the lawyer said. Shulman said Marinovich threw during a recent workout with USC's seniors that was attended by several NFL scouts.

"Actually, there are three or four kickers in college football that it certainly looks like will be drafted." "We're gonna spend a lot of time obviously getting to know those guys." "We're going to look at the guys that are in the NFL." "If there's a free agent kicker that's apealing to us, we're going to go and get that guy. We've got to improve in that area and that's obvious to everyone."

"Well, the draft is a big part of it, but ... I think the thing that really hurt our special teams was the lack of depth that we had this season. A lot of the guys who we considered to be core special teams players for us became starters. And that hurt us.
I do know this... We've got to kick the ball off the tee better. We've got to get our coverage people in better positions by hanging the ball up higher & deeper & I know we've got to make more field goals than we made this season. We did have a couple guys come through for us. Kenny Shedd was outstanding when we did use him on special teams. Our back up tight ends, our back up running backs and linebackers have got to find a more positive note in special teams for us to get better. Thats what we've got to find"

There's too much news for one day, so I'll split this into parts. Here's part one.
Eric Dickerson was elected into the Hall of Fame. Congrats!
Gruden was asked about all the quarterbacks he got to see in Mobile, Alabama, and if he would like to get one through the draft. Gruden responded with "I don't think you can ever have enough young arms in your program." This is a good philosophy. Weed through the QB's and develop some good blue chip prospects. The Raiders have had a quarterback problem that has not successfully been solved since Plunkett left.
The Coach was asked about the draft, and if we would move to get who we want. Gruden said "If we need to go up to get who we want, we'll do that." He also said "Who's there will have a lot to do with who we select."
Papa asked the status of George coming back...Jon responded "We want to try to get him back in the fold with the Oakland Raiders, but there is going to be some negotiation that takes place with every football player, and that's the case with Jeff. We'll know more in a little bit."
A little on Ware - "Andre Ware has ability" Gruden said, "We recognize some redeeming qualities in him and we're going to try to put him on our football team at least through the pre-season and see exactly where he is for ourselves."
To be continued...

Oakland Raiders Assistant Head Coach/ Offensive Line Coach Keith Rowen has been signed by the Kansas City Chiefs. He was signed as Tight Ends Coach.
Bruce Allen was on KNBR 68 today and had some interesting comments.
First He said we will probably move up or down in the draft depending on what trades they can work out. He says they are not happy at 18. Before the draft the Raiders are looking to acquire a linebacker, a defensive linemen, and a defensive back. This he will try to accomplish first through free agency, a trade, then the draft.
Allen said the Raiders want to improve on each side of the ball.
On Jeff George, the jury is still out. If a cheaper deal can not be worked out they will let George go. Nothing will be decided until the Pro Bowl. George has recently passed a physical.

It used to be that Raiders were not allowed on the "All Madden Team". They were not allowed because John said he would just pick all Raiders. Things have changed and this year, Raiders are allowed. Three Raiders made the team this year. Steve Wisniewski made the offensive line for his first year. Charles Woodson made it at corner and Darrell Russell on the defensive line. It's about time we've got some Raiders on this team!

Fox Sports News is reporting that out of the 130 available players for Cleveland, Desmond Howard is atop the list. Cleveland is also reportedly interested in the Redskins Gus Frerotte and the Cowboys Darryl Johnston. Carmen Policy is not so interested in Frerotte's 6mill per year contract. Johnston is slated to make $1.25 million.

The Raiders have signed OL Scott Whitaker and DT Dayroni Harris.
Charles Woodson edged out Vonnie Holiday by two votes for Ap's Rookie of the Year. Woodson was tied with Eric Allen with 5 interceptions. These two helped lead Oakland on a massive turn around. The defense went from 30 to number 5. Woodson was a major part of that. Woodson gave himself a B-. He said "I played pretty good, but I didn't do a lot of the little things I could have done, as far as watching more film, doing a lot more studying. I pretty much played off athletic ability." This guy has the capability to become one of the best DB's in football.
Last week against the San Diego Chargers the Raiders showed some spunk. Somewhere over the course of the week, they lost it. There were flashes coming out in the first quarter, but that soon diminished.
The Raiders came out on fire scoring 2 TD's in the first quarter. They did not allow the Chiefs any. Things were looking good. The offense did their part scoring three TD's which I can't remember them doing all year. This time it was the defense that let us down. The defense gave up enough points and yards in the third quarter for the whole game. Parts of the whole team seemed off for this game.
Last week against the #1 defense they gave up no sacks. This week against a mediocre defense, they gave up 6 sacks for -44 yds, a fumble, and a TD. Tim Brown forgot how to hold on to the ball with 4 fumbles. Rickey Dudley, Terry Mickens, and Harvey Williams all dropped passes. Despite all of that this was one of the most exciting games I watched all year. It was exciting to watch three different quarterbacks march down the field for TD's. Well, better luck next year.

The Oakland Raiders swept the Chargers with their 17-10 win on Sunday. Just a few minutes into the game the team knew there was no chance left for the playoffs. Despite that, they played hard and beat the No 1 defense in the league. The two main keys to the game were Anthony Newman and Randy Jordan. With just one of our injured defensive backs back on the field and a healthy runner, we had the edge to win the game.
The Raiders have been playing with 1-2 injured running backs just about all year.I believe that is a recipe for disaster. The Raiders played a healthy Randy Jordan on Sunday. Jordan racked up 82 yards on San Diego. That may not sound like a lot but it is. Kaufman ran for 17 yards in their previous game. The most anyone has run on San Diego is 87 yards.Jordan out ran Terrell Davis and others who are Pro Bowl bound.
With Anthony Newman back our defense was drastically improved. With the improved secondary it makes everyone else's job a little easier. Richard Harvey, Russell Maryland, and Darrell Russell each got one sack a piece. Meanwhile, Newman and Woodson each grabbed an interception. Come on Kansas City!
Darrell Russell was voted to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his two year career. The Raiders have a big task ahead of them if they want to get to the Playoffs. Even if they just want to end the season with a little respect, they will have to win at least one of the next two games. (Two for the playoffs)
Sunday they will travel into San Diego for a match up against the Chargers. Last time they met the Raiders won the game with a last minute bomb from quarterback Wade Wilson to speedy James Jett. Wilson is said to be the probable starter for this game.
For the Raiders to have a good chance at a victory they will have to find a running game. Napoleon is injured and Williams will have to take on the challenge. I think a great help would be to run Randy Jordan. Jordan seemed unstoppable against the Bills last week.Jordan has the size, and most importantly no film. San Diego can't very well prepare to stop Jordan without film to watch. It's the element of suprize I'm looking for.
The Chargers don't have any offense to speak of. They will though, have a very depleted Raiders defense to attack. I'm looking forward to see what the Raiders come up with. This should be a close hard fought game.
There may be a shining spot for the Kansas City game. Rumor has it that Jeff George, Derrik Graham, Napoleon Kaufman, Eric Turner, Anthony Newman, and Desmond Howard will be back. The Raiders want to go out with a bang!
Eric Allen injured his knee on an interception return Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. Eric will be out for the remainder of the year.
It has not been the most beautiful year for the Oakland Raiders, but the final result may be. The Raiders, led this week by Donald Hollas, have defeated the rival Seattle Seahawks. This is the second time this year they have accomplished such a feat. This is something they have not done since their return to Oakland.
Hollas was 20 of 31 for 266yds. One might say he's warming up a bit. Hollas has not lost a game as a starter for the Raiders. We sit alone atop the Wild Card charts. "It's kind of like Cinderella and True Grit rolled into one. With Donald Hollas starring as John Wayne." These words were used by Albert Lewis to describe the Hollas situation.
Jim Plunkett filled in for Dan Pastorini in 1980 and led the team to a Super Bowl victory. Is this something Hollas could do? It appears he may be getting the chance. Two weeks ago Jon Gruden said this is Jeff George's team and there will not be any quarterback controversy, but listen to what he has said this week. "Don Hollas continues to find ways to win fo us. He's become a viable option for us to continue to use." He's right, Hollas is 4-0 as a starter. That is something Jeff George has never been. Hollas has a lot to learn, but he is learning fast.
The Raiders return to the Vertical Game. Hollas has averaged 17.34yds per catch leading up to this game. Gruden said "He's throwing the ball deep. That goes back to the Vertical Game, the Oakland Raiders. Were going down the field." It's about time. Hollas spread the ball this week to 7 different receivers. Rickey Dudley caught 5 for 96 yards, Harvey Williams caught 4 for 29, Ritchie was 3 for 27, Derrek Brown caught 3 for 24 yards, Kaufman had 2 for 35, Tim Brown was 2 for 31, and James Jett pulled in one catch for 24 yards. There were over 50,000 fans out to see this game. We were treated to a 20 to 17 victory in the final seconds in this the first of hopefully many winning seasons to come.
